Lunch Bags Give Hope to the Homeless

On Sunday, September 21st, Calvary Church collected 325 bag lunches to distribute to the homeless in our community. Many individuals in our congregation offered to help hand them out.

One woman took four lunch bags and went out in search of “a need.”  The first couple homeless people accepted the bag as though it were required. The third one was so surprised. Looking at the simple brown bag, tears formed in his eyes. After a fourth person didn’t accept the bag, she returned to one who had been so grateful. When she saw him, she was stunned. "He had been so hungry and stuffed his mouth so quickly that crumbs covered his face," said Jan Winters. He eagerly accepted the last bag.

Calvary's own college ministry joined in the effort. A group took many of the leftover bags to give out among homeless individuals in in both downtown San Jose as well as Santa Cruz. "This event has sparked a passion in a number of our students," said Geoff Griffin, a leader in the college ministry. "We plan to do this on a monthly basis and build relationships with the folks on the streets."
