BALLROOM DANCE MINISTRY
Joyce Roberts, Staff Writer
Eight years ago, Bob and Kim Clark wanted to use their love of dancing and provide a comfortable community where people at Calvary Church could learn to dance and improve their skill in a safe, supportive environment. The Ballroom Dance Ministry was born.
The Ballroom Dance Ministry meets Sunday evenings from 6:30-8pm in the Family Life Center Gym. Basic courses are taught on a monthly rotating schedule including the waltz, samba, swing, salsa, tango, and much more. Each session is opened in prayer, setting the focus on God first.
Today, that class has reached far beyond the Calvary Church family. Out of the 50-60 people who meet every week, most come from the surrounding communities and are not members of Calvary Church.
"We used to attend a ballroom class three times a week in Almaden," said dancers, Frances and Jeff. "Now, we are less obsessive and attend only Friday nights and the Calvary class on Sunday, which is the least stressful for us! You are light and easy and accepting."
With the demands of leading a large group, Bob and Kim have started a Teacher Training Class that meets at 5:00pm on Sundays. More teachers will allow each student to get individual instruction as needed. As the ministry continues to grow, the “graduates” from this class can also assist the dancing newbie’s.
One new student, Bo, is already looking ahead into a future leadership role. "Even though I am a new student, but I have a strong desire to stay with the community long term and contribute...It is my faith and passion that has turned me to a leading role. I hope I can find opportunity to grow with the ballroom ministry."
