SERVING IN MOTION:
Calvary Sports MinistryBasketball Ministry Changes Lives

Denise Boiko , Staff Writer

Remember when a child's first exposure to church meant sitting silently on a hard pew for an hour? Thanks to Calvary's Sports Ministries, many children now get their first taste of church during an action-packed basketball game. Best of all, during this year’s winter program, 70 children made decisions to follow Jesus!

“It's definitely worth the busy schedule,” said Michael Allen, Sports Ministries Director. “My passion is to utilize the gifts God has given me to make a difference in these kids.”

Michael and his volunteer coaches did just that for the 790 basketball players who participated this year. Each week, they challenged kids Scripture memory verses and told them about Jesus. Children who decided to accept Jesus received a Bible with a devotion plan along with information about Calvary and its active children's ministries.

“It's amazing to take a simple tool like basketball, and sports in general, to introduce people to the gospel,” said Michael. About 70% of the players are from outside of Calvary; most do not attend or have ever been to a church service. All families understand that their children will learn about Christianity.

Children’s lives are being changed in other Calvary children’s programs. Recently, 8 children in AWANA Clubs and 15 in Kids Club elementary school outreach decided to follow Jesus. In each case, the children heard about Jesus and then spoke individually with their leaders. Kids Club draws about 75 children each week from diverse backgrounds – most have never been to church.

Vasona Park Trash Pick Up

SERVING IN MOTION: May 17th

VASONA & OAK MEADOW PARK COMMUNITY OUTREACH

More than half of Sunday's attenders on May 17th endured 100 degree heat to pick up trash, plant trees, remove weeks and take down fencing at Vasona and Oak Meadow Parks in service to our community. Families worked side-by-side and met others in our church family they had not previously known. Participants included people who have attended Calvary for years as well as newcomers.

Park rangers were amazed at the work accomplished and many passing by stopped to ask why a church what was going on. At the end of the day, community was not only built with the town of Los Gatos and Santa Clara County, but strengthened within our own walls as well.

Adopt-A-Chaplain Service Day

SERVING IN MOTION: May 17th

ADOPT-A-CHAPLAIN CARE PACKAGES

Over 70 people crammed into D-105 on Sunday May 17th, to assemble items brought by our church family to send to chaplains serving overseas. Most of them had never volunteered with Adopt-A-Chaplain ministries before and volunteered to help during the ministry's Tuesday / Thursday packing days in Saratoga. Thirty boxes have been packed and are ready to ship on Thursday.

Adopt-A-Chaplain will continue collecting supplies through this Sunday, May 31st. Items such as energy bars, beef jerky, hotel-sized toiletries, chapstick and sunscreen, music CDs and school supplies are all needed to help these chaplains minister to our troops and the children they meet overseas.
